When we think of police dogs, we almost always picture German Shepherds or the lesser-known Belgian Malinois that we usually assume are just some kind of variation of German Shepherd. What we don’t think about is how much those German Shepherds actually cost. The price takes a mighty big chunk out of the police forces’ pockets, which in turn, takes a mighty big chunk of our taxpayer dollars.
So how much do trained and bred shepherds cost each police department? They can range from $15-20,000 depending on the area. The fat price tag prompted the Clay County, NC Sheriff’s Office to think outside of the box.
Instead of employing the typical German Shepherd breed, they decided to hire two rescue pit bulls to see how things would work out. It didn’t take long for them to realize that they made the right decision. The new pit bull tandem worked a meth bust less than one week on the job!
On March 13th, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina decided to try something different. They hired two rescue pit bulls to join their force instead of paying the $15-20,000 price tag to employ a team of German Shepherds…
The decision was a win-win considering they were able to save money and two beautiful dogs from the euthanasia list. After less than one week on the job, the two new rescue pit bulls helped the officers make a crucial meth bust. There’s nothing better for a community than keeping meth zombies off the street and away from our children!
You may be wondering how much it cost the sheriff’s office to employ their new pit bull partners? Well, it was free. The hardest part was training them, and even that part ended up being a rather carefree experience. It’s amazing what people can do when they allow their minds to work. The animal lovers community loves this idea because we love saving dogs, and the officers couldn’t be more thrilled to work with their new crime-fighting partners!
